  • Grounds Maintenance Operative (Self-Employed)

    Location: Kent

    Contract: Self-Employed (CIS/The Guild)

    Pay: £15.00–£16.00 per hour (DOE)

    Hours: 47.5 hours per week

    Your role

    As a Grounds Maintenance Operative, you’ll keep outdoor spaces looking their best. You’ll work independently and as part of a team, using powered equipment and hand tools to deliver high standards every day.

    What you’ll do

    • Grass cutting using ride-on and pedestrian mowers

    • Brush cutting/strimming and edging

    • Shrub bed maintenance, hedge pruning, and weeding

    • Litter clearance and general site tidying

    • Seasonal bedding and planting

    • Other grounds maintenance tasks as required

    • Arboriculture Support: Assist tree teams with ground operations, including branch cross-cutting, hedge cutting, and feeding material into a manually operated wood chipper.

    • Fencing Support: Assist with basic fencing tasks such as stock fencing, post & rail, or close board installations
       

    About you

    • Experience in grounds maintenance or landscaping (essential)

    • Full UK driving licence (essential)

    • Reliable, well-presented, and customer-focused

    • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather

    • Self-motivated with a strong work ethic

    • Keen to broaden your horizons into tree management and fencing, supporting arboriculture teams and assisting with basic fencing tasks.

  • Landscaping & Fencing Team Leader

    Location: Kent (Wrotham-based with travel across contract sites)
    Contract: Full-time, Permanent

    Your new role

    Lead a skilled team delivering fencing and landscaping projects across highways, public realm, and green spaces. You’ll coordinate workloads, uphold safety and quality standards, and work closely with our Grounds Maintenance and Arboriculture teams to create safe, attractive environments.
     

    What you’ll do

    • Lead and motivate operatives to deliver fencing and landscaping tasks to specification.

    • Plan and allocate workloads, interpret drawings, and ensure quality standards are met.

    • Install and maintain: 

      • Stock and deer fencing

      • Tree protection barriers (scaffold pole systems & Heras)

      • Post & rail timber fencing

      • Close board timber fencing

      • Chain link fencing

      • Acoustic timber screening (specialist installation)

    • Carry out associated landscaping tasks: turfing, planting, hedge cutting, and seasonal works.

    • Operate and maintain plant and equipment (post driver, auger, breaker, compact excavator, ride-on mowers, strimmers).

    • Liaise with clients and supervisors; resolve issues promptly.

    • Ensure compliance with Health & Safety, RAMS, COSHH, and environmental policies.

    • Support Arboriculture teams with ground operations (cross-cutting, feeding wood chipper).
       

    About you

    • Experience leading fencing or landscaping teams in a commercial setting.

    • Strong practical knowledge of fencing installation and landscaping techniques.

    • Full UK driving licence (BE trailer licence desirable).

    • Competent with compact tractors, powered hand tools, and fencing plant.

    • Cable avoidance (CAT & Genny) competence

    • Confident with RAMS and safe systems of work.

    • Keen to broaden your horizons into tree management and wider landscaping projects.
       

    Desirable Skills

    • Ability to read and work from fencing drawings and specifications.

    Role Overview

    You’ll lead the delivery of multi-site fencing and landscaping projects, managing planned and reactive works across highways, public realm, and green spaces. You’ll ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards, meet client KPIs, and coordinate operational teams and resources.

     

    Key Responsibilities

    • Operational Leadership: Supervise teams delivering fencing, landscaping, and seasonal works.

    • Planning & Scheduling: Implement programmes and manage reactive works via CAFM (Joblogic or similar).

    • Compliance & Safety: Ensure adherence to ISO 9001, 14001, 45001, RAMS, CDM and permit-to-work systems.

    • Performance Monitoring: Conduct site audits; manage KPI reporting; maintain accurate records in CAFM.

    • Client Liaison: Act as the primary point of contact for performance, reporting, and issue resolution.

    • Resource Management: Allocate staff, vehicles, and equipment; manage inventory and consumables.

    • Site Visits & Estimating: Carry out site inspections, prepare Bills of Quantities (BoQ), and provide quotations for lump-sum projects.

    • Support Arboriculture teams with ground operations (cross-cutting, wood chipper).

    Your Role

    As an Arborist / Climber, you’ll carry out a wide range of tree work, from precision pruning to complex dismantling, ensuring safety and quality at every stage. You’ll work as part of a skilled team on highways, public realm, and green spaces.
     

    Key Responsibilities

    • Lead or support arborist teams to deliver scheduled work programmes.

    • Perform aerial tree work: climbing, aerial rescue, pruning, rigging, and chainsaw use from rope & harness or MEWP.

    • Carry out ground operations: branch removal, crown reduction, and powered pole pruner use.

    • Handle windblown trees and emergency dismantling safely.

    • Operate machinery and equipment: manually fed wood-chippers and MEWP (IPAF 1b, 3a, 3b).

    • Ensure compliance with industry legislation, safety guidelines, and client standards.

    • Coach and mentor junior team members.

    • Work autonomously while maintaining a professional, first-class service.
       

    Essential Skills & Qualifications

    • Minimum 2 years’ experience in arboriculture (domestic and commercial)

    • Confident climber with strong pruning and dismantling skills

    • NPTC/LANTRA certifications in: 

      • Chainsaw Maintenance & Cross-Cutting (CS30/31)

      • Tree Climbing & Aerial Rescue (CS38)

      • Chainsaw from Rope & Harness (CS39)

    • IPAF MEWP certification (1b, 3a, 3b).

    • Valid UK driving licence (B+E an advantage).

    • Current DNO authorisation (preferred but not essential).
       

    Desirable

    • Additional NPTC units (Aerial Tree Pruning CS40, Aerial Tree Rigging CS41).

    • Utility arboriculture experience (UA1, UA2.1, UA2.2, UA2.3 desirable).

    • Experience working near power lines and highways.

    • NRSWA Streetworks (Signing, Lighting & Guarding – Unit O1 / S1)

    Arborist / Climber

    Ferns Group is one of the South East’s leading providers of arboriculture, landscaping, and infrastructure services. With over 25 years’ experience and a team of highly skilled Tree Surgeons, we’re the perfect place for developing climbers to learn the trade properly.

     

    If you’ve got 1–2 years’ experience or have completed college-level arboriculture and want to become a confident climber, we’ll train you, support you, and give you a clear pathway into a full Climber role.

     

    What You’ll Be Doing

    Working in professional 2–3 person teams, you’ll support our Arborists on a variety of tree work across highways, public realm and green spaces.

    You will:

    • Assist with aerial work, climbing, pruning and basic dismantles

    • Carry out ground operations including chainsaw work, chipping and branch handling

    • Work with modern machinery and equipment (MEWPs, chippers, rigging equipment)

    • Follow industry safety standards and best practice

    • Learn from experienced Climbing Arborists and Supervisors

    • Progress into more complex climbing as your skills develop

     

    Who We’re Looking For

    You don’t need to be a fully qualified climber - just someone with core skills and the right attitude.

     

    Essential:

    • 1–2 years’ experience in arboriculture OR college qualification/Level 2 Arb

    • Confident with basic tree climbing & pruning

    • NPTC/LANTRA units: 

      • CS30/31 (Chainsaw Maintenance & Cross-Cutting)

      • CS38 (Tree Climbing & Aerial Rescue)

    • A positive, safety-conscious attitude

    • Willingness to learn from senior climbers

    • Full UK driving licence

     

    Desirable (Training Provided):

    • CS39 – Chainsaw from Rope & Harness

    • CS40 / CS41

    • IPAF MEWP

    • UA Utility qualifications
